Rationale and Purpose of the Module:

The module is intended to give practical experience in a live broadcast situation to fourth year journalism students. The experience of working under deadline pressure to produce professional standard output from the University of Limerick in simulated radio, TV and online broadcasts will be an important training exercise for BA journalism and new media students.

Syllabus:

The module will enable the learner to put advanced radio, television and online broadcasting skills into practice in a real-world context, by planning and producing programming, in a range of categories, and operating an on-campus live web site. Students will adopt the roles of site editor and manager, head of news, head of sport, presenter, producer, researcher and reporter. The module will enable the learner to fully develop team-working skills in news and other programming roles, and to hone their editorial judgement in high-pressure, on-air situations. Students will be expected to ensure all programming complies with the relevant broadcasting legislation, as well as with the codes and standards set out by the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland (BAI). Learning will be via practice based learning.

Cognitive (Knowledge, Understanding, Application, Analysis, Evaluation, Synthesis) On successful completion of this module, students should be able to: A detailed understanding of the qualities and responsibilities of radio roles from the researcher to the station editor and how these interact to produce quality programming. A detailed understanding of the legislative and other codes that govern the broadcast media in Ireland, and the ability to applying them to programming content in high-pressure situations. An in-depth understanding of team leadership skills, and of how group dynamics impact on radio production.

Affective (Attitudes and Values)

On successful completion of this module, students should be able to: An in-depth appreciation of broadcas scheduling methods, and the importance of key day-parts and their role in attracting and retaining broadcas audiences. An excellent appreciation of what makes engaging broadcast content for news and other programming for the target audience on the UL campus. Excellent editorial judgement and the ability to apply relevant legislation and codes in pressurised situations.

Psychomotor (Physical Skills)

On successful completion of this module, students should be able to: Demonstrate highly developed news reading, vocal delivery and presentation skills and good on-air fluency in live broadcast situations. Demonstrate an ability to work in a newsroom environment for broadcast media and an ability to manage output under deadline pressure and communicate effectively in a team Demonstrate the ability to fulfil a designated radio production role to a high professional standard and have excellent audio editing skills.
